里山かまどご飯 Kamado lunch

Work together with your teacher to prepare a simple yet special Japanese lunch, just as the people of Kumagawa-juku did hundreds of years ago. The centerpiece of this lunch is the finest Koshihikari rice, grown with the purest water from Wakasa town.

Information

The experience:
Hundreds of years ago, every household within the post town of Kumagawa-juku had a kamado, or old-style Japanese wood-burning stove. Nowadays the locals of Kumagawa-juku use regular appliances, but within our main office, Hishiya, lies an Edo period kamado.

Using this piece of history, work together with your teacher to make a simple yet delicious lunch, as the locals of Kumagawa-juku did for hundreds of years. As you work on your lunch, learn about each ingredient and how the farmers get them from their fields to your plate.

This is a chance to live as the locals did for hundreds of years. You can always walk through an old town, but getting your hands dirty is what you'll really remember.
